Diana Sullivan Spenski, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and educator, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2026, in Williamsburg, Virginia, at the age of 99. Born on August 1, 1926, in Boston, Massachusetts, Diana led a remarkable life marked by dedication to education, family, and a passion for the natural world.
Diana pursued her academic interests with vigor, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology followed by a Master’s in Education. Her career as a biology and chemistry teacher was distinguished by her commitment to nurturing young minds and fostering a love for science in her students. Her influence extended beyond the classroom as she continuously sought to bring out the best in everyone around her, making each individual feel heard and valued.
She shared an extraordinary and devoted partnership with her constant companion and beloved husband, Robert Spenski. Together, they embraced life fully—traveling the world, playing golf, and delighting in fine dining, wine, music, and dancing. In their early retirement years, they found special joy in wintering in Naples, Florida, where they created cherished memories and continued to celebrate the life they built side by side.
Her interests were wide-ranging, including a keen focus on maintaining positive communications with family members and friends. Diana’s gift for engaging in meaningful conversations made her a cherished confidante and counselor to many. She had an innate ability to make people feel happy and understood, always bringing out their best qualities.
Diana enjoyed spending her leisure time tending to her flower garden, immersing herself in books, and championing environmental causes. Her dedication to human development and behavior underscored her lifelong passion for understanding and improving the world around her.
Preceded in death by her parents, John Langdon Sullivan and Florence Howard; her sister, Margot Grosvenor; her brother, James Sullivan; her son, Charles McKinney; and her granddaughter, Diana Helms, her memory remains a guiding light for those who survive her.
She is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Robert Spenski; her children, Lynda (Frank) Barone, Sharon (David) Helms, Kent McKinney, Jeff (Kristina) McKinney, and Philip (Robin) McKinney; and her step-children, Kim (Steve) Vilante and Rick (Amy) Spenski. Her legacy is further carried on by her seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild.
