Helen Lorena Rice, 82, of Virginia Beach

Helen Lorena Rice, age 82, of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2025. She was born on June 12, 1943, in Machias, Maine, to James and Hazel Hoar.

Helen was preceded in death by her beloved sister Jacqueline Pittman, she is survived by her two sons, Stephen Van Wart and Matthew McEwen and her daughter Lorene Gagnon, and her nine cherished grandchildren: Michael, Jamie, Jordan, Matthew, Erin, Zach, Bryce, Brooklyn, and Skylar.

Helen was a woman of many talents and passions. A lifelong teacher at heart, she had a deep love for learning and was dedicated to sharing knowledge with others. She cherished the beach, finding peace and inspiration in its beauty. A gifted artist, Helen was an amazing drawer with a particular fondness for sugar skulls, which reflected her vibrant and creative spirit. In addition to her love of art, Helen enjoyed gardening, photography, and spending time with loved ones. She had a warm and welcoming personality, always ready to listen and offer support, and was known for her nonjudgmental and kind nature. Helen’s wisdom and spirituality touched the lives of many, and she was always eager to help anyone in need.

Helen was a proud graduate of the University of Maine, Class of 1964, where she fostered lifelong friendships and nurtured her intellectual curiosity. Her legacy is one of love, wisdom, and unwavering generosity. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service to celebrate Helen’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Helen Rice Scholarship Fund to support aspiring teachers.

May Helen’s memory be a blessing, and may her spirit continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
