Nancy Marie Smith of Williamsburg, who recently resided at the Masonic Community of Virginia, passed away peacefully on the morning of November 4, 2025.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Hank and Helen Carlson, sister Janet Schau, brother Marvin Carlson and boyfriend Donald Baker.

She is survived by her sister Diane Dunnell and brother Dale Carlson, son Randy (Trudy), Dan (Rachael), and Marc, Grandchildren Nathan (Jennifer), Calvin, Ema and Zoe, more than 20 Nieces and Nephews and her former brother-in-law Elter Smith (Yvette), who she always thought of as a brother, and a multitude of cherished family and friends.

Nancy was an adventurous traveler, moving from her home state of Minnesota upon graduation from high school to relocate to San Diego where she met her husband Curtis and relocated to an additional six additional states as a military spouse before finally settling in Virginia in the early 70’s. She was an avid camper and devoted reader, and passed along her love for attaining knowledge to her sons. Nancy attended all events, concerts, athletic events, and family celebrations of her sons and grandchildren and her presence was welcomed and provided a constant source of support and comfort for her family.

Much of her extended family is located in Minnesota and in Louisiana, and she managed to keep a steady presence with both sides of very different family cultures while being beloved by all. All celebrations and holidays centered around Nancy’s home and she made certain that all were welcome-friends and family alike. An avid fan of Ray Charles, Nancy had the opportunity to attend his last concert in Richmond with her sons.

Nancy graduated from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis and worked at a variety of vocations. She loved her many years as a school bus driver but thoroughly enjoyed her work as Deputy Commissioner of the Revenue for James City County, a position she retired from. Nancy delighted in the company of her grandchildren and provided unconditional support and love for all.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Nancy’s life and share their memories with family on Friday, December 12, 2025, at First Colony Clubhouse, from 6pm to 9pm.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to MAHOVA in her honor.
