With profound love and cherished memories, we announce the peaceful passing of Dorothy Jones Valentine of Virginia Beach, Virginia on November 2, 2025.
Her radiant spirit uplifted everyone around her; she faced life’s challenges with unwavering optimism and strength, always guided by her deep trust in God. Throughout her remarkable journey she embraced many roles—beloved mother and grandmother, dedicated educator, accomplished business leader, social activist, and devoted friend.
Born on February 3, 1937, in Portsmouth, Virginia to Thomas and Ethel Jones, Dorothy was the eldest of ten siblings. She was preceded in death by her loving parents and her cherished husband of 60 years, Herman Valentine Sr. Dorothy’s legacy lives on in her devoted sons, Herman Valentine, Jr. and Bryce Valentine; her beloved daughter-in-law, Suzette Valentine; her adored grandchildren, Natalie, Joshua, Justin, Eddie, and Santiago; and a large circle of extended family and friends.
Guided by an unwavering belief in the power of language, Dorothy earned her Bachelor’s degree in English, Master’s degree in Communications, and Ph.D. in Organizational Communication at the age of 82. She shared her wisdom and encouragement with students at Norfolk State University, Texas Southern University, and Strayer University, leaving a legacy of knowledge and compassion within every classroom she entered.
Dorothy’s professional journey began at the Naval Supply Center, later lending her talents to Senator Spong’s office, contributing to the Model Cities program, and ultimately served as COO for SMA Microsystems. She served the community and built lifelong bonds through her membership in Delta Sigma Theta, Links, Inc. and The Moles.
Dorothy’s love for the arts reflected her vibrant spirit—she found joy in gospel spirituals, fashion, feel-good films and the timeless words of the Romantic poets. Her greatest happiness, though, was found in her family. Dorothy’s devotion to her children and grandchildren was evident in every encouraging word and gentle guidance, inspiring them to nurture their gifts and follow their dreams. She was always a compassionate listener, always sharing hope and optimism during challenging times.
