Margaret Harris Tong, 91, of Newport News, VA, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 23, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones.
She was the third of six sisters born to Robert Harris and Illa Jones Harris. Margaret graduated from Newport News High School in 1952 and was a devoted member of Menchville Baptist Church. Her faith was strong, and she shared the love of Jesus through countless hugs and a warm, genuine smile.
Margaret worked at Sears for 16 years, followed by a 21-year career at Montgomery Ward. She found joy in serving her church, sharing Bible verses, spending time with her grandchildren, watching baseball, and cheering for the Washington Nationals. She also loved chatting on the phone, laughing, and catching up with friends, family, and especially her beloved sister, IlaFaye.
Margaret was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, Frederick Tong; her son, Ronnie Tong Sr. and her four sisters: Doris Jean Harris, Mozelle Raye Harris Hicks, Ruby Clark, and Edna Tightert.
She is survived by her son, Randy Tong (Rosemarie); daughter-in-law, Vickie Tong; sister, IlaFaye Robertson; grandchildren, Ronnie Tong Jr. (Saffron), Emily Price (Kevin), Melissa Tong (Debra), and Hans Ehlhard (Alda) and great-grandchildren, Caleb, Wesley, Peyton, Bradley, Caden, and Connor, all of whom she adored.
Margaret cherished all of her friends. Norma, whom we adopted into our family, was always by her side. Gail, who was always stopping by to bring joy and goodies. Her loving neighbors, Anna, Gary, and Hannah (her adopted granddaughter), who shared meals and many smiles. We can’t forget her counting buddies on Mondays. The list is endless for those that Margaret loved.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at Menchville Baptist Church, 248 Menchville Road, Newport News, VA 23602.
