We remember and celebrate the life of Marguerite E. “Maggie” Holleran, who passed away peacefully at home at the age of 90 on the 6th of June 2025. She was born in Pittsburgh PA on the 3rd of December 1934 to Thomas and Agnes Devlin. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
Maggie graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. She met the love of her life there…newly commissioned Army Lieutenant Raymond Holleran. Their marriage of 66 years crossed oceans and countries as they ventured through their lives, raising two sons and finally settling down in Hampton, VA in 1976.
After some early years as a teacher, Maggie settled into the nomadic military homemaker role for many years. She was a “second Mom” to the kids in the neighborhood. But the lure of teaching young children drew her back to work. She offered them her warm smile and nurturing spirit as a librarian at St Mary Star of the Sea school in Hampton, VA for 12 years. In this role, she shared her love of reading and literature with staff, students, and families.
Enjoying the simple pleasures of life, she was a friend to dogs, cats and any animals she crossed paths with, often carrying on a short conversation to let them know how much she cared for them. Closer to home, she named and overfed the backyard birds and squirrels…because she could.
Maggie was preceded in death by her husband Raymond in 2023. She is survived by her son Mark Holleran and his wife Laine, their son Matt, and their daughter Annie with her husband Kyle Ruona. She is survived by her son Sean Holleran and his wife Stacy, and their son Mason.
A private family service will be held at the Altmeyer Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, Maggie’s family requests you make a donation to St Mary Star of the Sea School.
