Frederick “Freddie” William Hodges, 86, of West Point

Frederick “Freddie” William Hodges (Vincent Funeral Home)

Frederick William “Freddie” Hodges, affectionately known as “Grumps” by his adoring grandchildren, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2025, surrounded by the love and presence of his devoted family.

Born and raised in West Point, Virginia, Freddie lived a life defined by love, laughter, and an unwavering generosity of spirit. He married his high school sweetheart, Sarah, and together they built a home overflowing with joy, where humor was not just encouraged—it was the heartbeat of every moment shared.

Freddie built a successful career in the paper industry as an independent sales and consulting contractor, but his life’s greatest work was his gift with people. Blessed with a razor-sharp wit, a mischievous grin, and a storyteller’s charm, Freddie had a rare talent for lighting up every room he entered. Whether through a perfectly timed punchline, a clever turn of phrase, or a playful tease, Freddie had a way of making people laugh — deeply, wholeheartedly, and often.

To Freddie, laughter was more than just amusement — it was a language of connection, healing, and love. His humor could be colorfully bold, but it was always underpinned by a profound kindness that left you feeling seen, valued, and uplifted. No one remained a stranger to Freddie for long — just a friend waiting to be drawn into the warmth of his joy.

He gave generously of both time and heart, and everyone fortunate enough to know him carries a treasured “Freddie story” — a moment of hilarity, an unexpected joke, or a wisecrack delivered at just the right moment. In a world that can sometimes feel far too serious, Freddie was a beacon of light, a reminder that laughter is not only a blessing but one of the greatest gifts we can share.

In his final days, Freddie was cared for with extraordinary compassion and dignity by the dedicated teams at Riverside Walter Reed Hospice and Riverside Walter Reed Hospital. The Hodges family extends their deepest gratitude for the comfort, professionalism, and heartfelt kindness shown during this sacred time. Their care was not only medical, but profoundly human — and for that, the family will be forever thankful.

Freddie is survived by his loving wife, Sarah — a devoted wife, caregiver, and partner whose own warmth matched the home they created together. He also leaves behind his sons, Keith (wife Shelley) and Todd, and his five beloved grandchildren: Derek, Francesca, Katie, Chloe, and Ella — the brightest stars in his sky; as well as his brother, Thomas “Hammer” Hodges; sister, Carla Sturtz Ripchick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Freddie Hodges made the world better not through grand, sweeping gestures, but through everyday moments filled with laughter, connection, and love. His legacy lives on in every chuckle shared, every story retold, and every life he touched. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered.
