With heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of our beautiful, outgoing, and adventurous Melissa Danielle Durham, 44, of Norfolk, VA, who passed away on April 8, 2025. Melissa was born on January 7, 1981, in Portsmouth, VA, to Joy Durham.
She is preceded in death by her beloved mother, Joy , and her grandfather, John Nance. Growing up, Melissa was lovingly cared for by her young mother Joy, her Nana, Papa, Aunt Nancy, Aunt Teresa, and Uncle Johnny—giving her what she always described as the happiest early childhood a girl could wish for. Although her Papa passed away when she was only 15 months old, he left a lasting impression, bringing endless smiles and laughter to their short time together.
Melissa never fully recovered from the passing of her mother in July 2017. Left with cherished memories, she often walked along the beach to feel closer to her. Joy was Melissa’s rock—through all of life’s ups and downs, Melissa always found comfort in calling her mom.The greatest joy and fulfillment in Melissa’s life came from her children, born from her loving marriage to James Shoemake.
Left to carry on her legacy and cherish her memory are her amazing children: Jameson (Adelyn), Renee’ (Rashaud), and Rachel; along with her precious grandchildren, A’Launi and Rashaud Smith Jr. Melissa is also deeply missed by her beloved Nana, Revonda Durham; Uncle John; Aunt Teresa & Uncle Mark Eidson; Aunt Nancy & Uncle Richard Redford; cousins Erica, Sean, Jamie, Matthew; her special little runt, Courtney; Kelli; and many other loving family members and friends. She is also survived by her father, James Clarke of North Carolina, and her siblings.
Melissa never met a stranger—she was a friend to all, always ready to lend a helping hand. She loved shopping for her children to keep them stylish, and she was always on an adventure, letting her free spirit roam wild. Melissa especially enjoyed hiking and camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Her presence brought laughter to every room, and she almost always left others with a smile. To know Melissa was to love her—she was truly beautiful, inside and out. She will be dearly missed, but we are at peace knowing she is reunited with her mom and Papa. One day, we will hold her again with loving arms.
