Known as Mema, Mom, Sissy, Aunt Martha and Mrs. Ev; Martha Gray Everton went to heaven on Saturday, January 11, 2025 just days after her 83rd birthday and one last snow dusting, which was her favorite.
Born in Portsmouth, Virginia and living her life in Newport News, Martha and Lloyd married in April of 1961, spending 49 years of their adult lives together. They raised two children, became grandparents and great-grandparents.
Martha was a bus driver for the City of Newport News for more than 30 years. After retirement, Martha spent her free time with her toes in the sands of the Outer Banks, picking out fat quarters in JoAnn Fabrics, and baking her heart out any chance she could. She was known for quilting beautiful “Martha-sized” quilts, baking her famous 5 egg pound cake and delicious brick bat fudge. She enjoyed Thanksgiving camping trips with her family, snuggling with cats and anything with the color purple. She will be truly missed.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Everton; her parents, Martha and Hervy L. Gray; her older brother, Hervy Gray and her brother-in-law, Jay Everton. She is survived by her children, Jeff Everton (Paula Everton) and Chris Everton; her two grandchildren, Kierstin Grather (Cory Grather) and Christopher Everton and her great-granddaughter, Chloe Grather. She is also survived by her siblings, James Gray (Diane Gray) and Steve Gray (Fran Gray), her sisters-in-law, Charlene Gray and Jane Everton, as well as many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 17, 2025 at Weymouth Funeral Home with Visitation to follow. Interment will take place at a later date at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Peninsula SPCA or Alzheimer’s Association in Martha’s name.
