Jean Marie Brieske (Altmeyer Funeral Home)

Jean Marie Brieske, 88, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2024, in Norfolk, Virginia. Born on October 20, 1935, in Paterson, New Jersey, Jean’s life was a testament to resilience, love, and unwavering determination.

Born to the late Edmund Fazakerly, a first-generation American, and Magdalena Dewitt, an immigrant from Holland, Jean was an only child whose family faced many trials during the Great Depression and World War II. Despite these hardships, they persevered, and it was this sheer will and determination that became the cornerstone of Jean’s life.

Jean channeled her strength and tenacity into a fulfilling career in food service, working in various restaurants as well as Fairfield Elementary School. Her dedication to her work was matched only by her devotion to her family. Jean was a loving wife to the late William Brieske, the love of her life. Together, they raised five children and cherished numerous grandchildren, who were the light of her life.

Beyond her professional and familial commitments, Jean found joy in crocheting, creating beautiful pieces that will be treasured by her loved ones for years to come. Her legacy includes not just the tangible items she crafted with her hands, but also the invaluable lessons she imparted: to persevere, to love unconditionally, and to remain resilient in the face of adversity.

Jean’s memory will forever be cherished by her caring daughters Sharon (Jeffrey) Schmidt, Patricia Hevenor, and Rosalie (Chad) Cobb; adoring sons, George (Cindy) Core and Edward (Susan) Core, thirteen loving grandchildren, 20 amazing great-grandchildren and 1 precious great-great grandchild.

Jean’s life will be celebrated at a Memorial Gathering on Monday, August 12, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, located at 5033 Rouse Drive in Virginia Beach.

In remembering Jean Marie Brieske, we honor a woman who exemplified strength and compassion, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to know her. Her spirit will continue to inspire us to face life’s challenges with grace and determination.
