It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Daryl Francis Maynes, who departed on July 25, 2024, in Portsmouth, Virginia, at the age of 43.

Born on April 10, 1981, in New York, Daryl, affectionately known as Francis to his family and Daryl to his shipmates, was a cherished husband, devoted son, and esteemed Navy veteran.

Daryl’s unconditional love for his wife, Erin Nicole Calkin-Maynes, was the cornerstone of his life, surpassing any personal or professional achievements. His service to the United States Navy began on December 20, 1999. Over his distinguished career, he held the rank of Cryptologic Technician Technical Senior Chief and served with distinction at 12 different commands, deploying with 20 different submarines. His exceptional work ethic and dedication were evident in his commitment to excellence. An influential leader and mentor, Daryl’s personal impact will be carried forward by generations of Sailors across the cryptologic technical and submarine communities. Known for his humility and focus on the success of others, Daryl transformed challenges into triumphs with remarkable efficiency.

Outside his professional life, Daryl had a deep passion for music, technology, and science. An exceptional cook and a talented pianist, he could fill any room with beautiful melodies and create memorable moments through his culinary skills. His love for writing, learning, and self-improvement was reflected in his dedication to physical fitness, ongoing education, and communicating his intricate thoughts with pen and paper.

Daryl’s infectious sense of humor and love for children made him a beloved figure to all who knew him. Often described as the biggest kid and goofball in the room, he would breakout randomly breakout into dances bringing joy and laughter wherever he went.

Daryl is preceded in death by his mother, Charlene Turner. He is survived by his beloved wife, Erin; his father Lawrence Maynes Jr.; his siblings, Meleka Jemmott, Tyrone “T.J.” Turner, and Luther “Poppi” Turner; his grandfather Larry Maynes; his grandmother Lucille Rountree; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Daryl’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication, boundless enthusiasm, and genuine kindness. His spirit will continue to inspire and warm the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.

Rest in peace, Daryl. Your light will forever shine in our hearts.
