Richard Granville Parkhurst, 93, of Williamsburg

Richard Granville Parkhurst of Williamsburg, Virginia and formerly of Cranford, New Jersey died on July 27, 2024 at the age of 93. He was born on October 12, 1930, the son of Elizabeth Lukens and Joseph Lanius Parkhurst and the youngest of their four children.

Dick graduated in 1948 from Rahway High School in New Jersey. He attended and graduated from Rutgers University in 1952 where he was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity and the varsity swim team for the Scarlet Knights. He also was a member of the ROTC and served in the US Air Force during the Korean War. Dick had a long career at The Bank of New York in New York City during which he attended and graduated from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking.

In his younger years, Dick enjoyed church league basketball and developed a love for the game of tennis which he learned from his father. Some of his fondest memories are of his summers at Ragged Lake Camp in New Hampshire where he made lifelong friends and progressed to waterfront counselor in his teens.

Dick met his wife, M’Liz, in Bay Head, New Jersey where their entire family enjoyed many summers together. He was most known for his endless time on the tennis courts at the Bay Head Yacht Club in his distinctive tennis whites.

Dick loved music of all eras, especially his time playing his banjo for string bands in the Mummers New Year’s Day Parade in Philadelphia.

Dick is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Elizabeth Campbell Parkhurst. He is also survived by daughter, Elizabeth Perkins (Jeff); and sons, Dick (Betsy) and Stephen (Taylor); his sister, Katharine Dodd; and his beloved grandchildren, Caroline, Sarah Katharine, Emily, Jeffrey, Lindsey (Graves), Stewart, Sallie, Henry, Campbell and Lane; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 500 Lake Avenue, Bay Head, New Jersey, 08742 on September 14, 2024 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his honor to All Saints Episcopal Church or Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, 201 West Duke of Gloucester Street, Williamsburg, Virginia 23185.
