Tina Stone, 71, of Newport News

Tina Stone (Weymouth Funeral Home & Crematory)

We are sad to announce the passing of Tina Stone, 71, of Newport News, VA, on July 10, 2024. Born in Florida in 1952, Tina spent time in a variety of locations with her family’s Air Force assignments including Alabama, England, Louisiana, and Colorado. Before moving to Newport News in 1979 she lived in Limestone, Maine.

A lifelong music lover, Tina sang in the Alto II section of the Virginia Choral Society for four decades and was a member of their chamber vocal ensemble Opus 2. Over the years, she performed with artists such as Sarah Brightman and Reba McEntire. As a cantor and choir member at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Newport News for over 25 years, Tina used her vocal gifts in an expression of devotion to her faith. Her love of music and the arts was passed to her children, Breanne, a dancer by profession and Gabriel, a musician.

Tina loved animals and nature. Over the course of her life she had a dog, at least 7 cats, a parrot, turtle, ferret, and a giant Plecostomus that she referred to all of as her “animal companions.” She enjoyed hiking in the woods, going to the beach, and kayaking on the local waterways. Other hobbies included sewing, crafting, and she was a voracious reader of novels.

Her dedication to children and education was displayed through her volunteering with the Boy and Girl Scouts as well as being a school volunteer and classroom mother for both of her children.

Tina never met a stranger; she could strike up a conversation with anyone she met. She loved decorating for seasons and holidays (especially Halloween) and was always preparing for the next party she would host.

Tina was predeceased by her brother, Steve Pickard. She is survived by her two children, Breanne and Gabriel; daughter-in-law, Beth; grandchildren, Liam and Daphne; brothers, David Scott Pickard, Tim Pickard, and Mark Pickard.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 5, 2024 at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Newport News, VA. All are welcome, a reception will be held in the parish social hall immediately following the interment at the church columbarium.
