Lewis Alvin Ames, 87, of West Point

Lewis Alvin Ames, 87, went to be with his heavenly father on June 15, 2024. Lewis was born in West Point on July 7th, 1936.

Lewis is survived by his loving wife of nearly 66 years, Rita Dixon Ames, his children, Mark Ames (Kimberlee), Wendy Ames, Janine Ames (Craig Bamsey), 6 beloved grandchildren, Aidan Welch, Alex Ames, Shea Welch Maher (Andrew), Stefan Ames, Colin Welch, and Connor Bamsey; great-grandchildren, Josie Maher, Emmett Maher; and sister, Barbara Horsley. Lewis was preceded in death by two siblings, Douglas Moskalski and Patricia Snow.

Lewis retired from the West Point paper mill owned by Laurent Paperboard, Inc., formerly Chesapeake Corporation, after more than 30 years. As a salesman covering the Northeast, he particularly enjoyed his frequent trips to New York and Boston. Many of his longstanding customers became good friends.

Lewis and Rita enjoyed traveling in their spare time, especially cruises, train trips, and walking the beach and golfing on Hilton Head Island. Lew was happiest when outdoors. He was an avid golfer and hunter and a passionate fisherman. He spent many hours on his dock on the Mattaponi River seeking the ultimate catch and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Lew served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and on many committees at West Point First Baptist Church, where he and Rita were longtime members.

Services will be held 1 PM, Saturday, June 29th, 2024 at the First Baptist Church, 414 Main Street in West Point, Virginia with reception to follow in the church fellowship hall. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church general fund,
