The matriarch of her family, Mary Sue Satterfield, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 83.
She was a determined lady with a strong will for life. However, her health battles were much more than her precious body could handle on this earth.
On Friday, March 15, 2024, her Heavenly Father called her home to join the host of angels waiting for her. One of those angels was the love of her life, “Junior” Satterfield. They were teenage sweethearts and had been married for almost 60 years when he passed in 2016. She missed him dearly during the past eight years and never knew another love. She was also reunited with her parents William Turner Harris and Lillian Ellen Harris (Lanier), baby sister Peggy Allen Harris, and great granddaughter, Bodhi Magnolia.
She leaves a wonderful legacy called Family. Mary Sue is survived by her son, Chuck Satterfield and wife Angie; Daughters, Dianne McRoy, Donna Wiggins and husband Greg, Debbie Gardner and husband Tommy; 15 grandchildren – Brody, Blaine, Shannon, Donny, Danielle, Mindy, Jeffrey, Jacob, Jessica, Hope, Hillary, Haley, Haven, Tommy, Tucker; and 15 (soon to be 17) great grandchildren. She is also survived by two of her childhood best and lifelong friends, Myrta Ann and Elaine. Her family truly appreciates the prayers and love they shared with her up to the very day she passed.
She was born on August 18, 1940 in Oxford, North Carolina. As an only child growing up, she loved her small town filled with lots of extended family and friends. She dreamed of having her own big family one day and God fulfilled that dream for her. In June of 1957, she married the love of her life, Junior. They moved to Williamsburg and started their family. She was a selfless woman, always putting her husband and children’s needs over her own. She sacrificed friendships to always make sure she was available to and for her family. She also worked outside the home for many years at the A & P Grocery store and Big Star grocery. However, her heart’s desire was to be home and that desire became a reality when their fourth child was born. This is when she began her home daycare business that blessed many families, not just her own. Mary Sue quickly became “Ms. Mary” to lots of children and an extra special “MaMa” to many of her grandchildren who were blessed to be in her care while their parents worked.
Next to her love for family, she loved her yard and growing flowers, the beach, and sporty Chevrolets. She worked tirelessly in her yard to grow the most beautiful roses and azaleas in the neighborhood. Summers at Myrtle Beach were always filled with laughter, fun, and “Don’t get my hair wet” memories. She would only consider a two door Chevrolet, mainly a Camaro or Monte Carlo as a cool car for herself at any age, even into her 80’s. Just last summer she expressed interest in taking her Chevy for a fast drive. In her mind, she was not too old to accelerate one more time. She was the most modest, young at heart Mom and MaMa to her family and others.
A celebration of her life will be held during her favorite time of year, summer. She loved the warm sunshine and beautiful flowers of the season.
