David “Al” Carter, 72, of Shacklefords, VA passed away peacefully January 6, 2024.
Al retired from West Rock after many years of service to the papermill. He loved gardening, bluegrass music, fishing, hunting, and tractor pulls.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, James Emmett Carter and Kitty Smith; one brother, Anthony Carter; and stepdaughter, Beth Rader.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Mary Carter; three stepdaughters, Peggy Hall (Donald), Jean French (John) and Hope Daniel; stepson, Alan Ware (Debbie); sister, Nina Carter; eight grandchildren, including “special granddaughter”, Carter Nikki Daniel; nine great-grandchildren, and six great-greatgrandchildren; as well as his constant fur companion, Iris.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, January 10 at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th Street, West Point, VA. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, January 11 also at the funeral home, with burial following in Shackelfords Chapel UMC Cemetery.
