Herbert Forbes Madison, affectionately known as Herbie, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2023, at the age of 81. Born on October 25, 1942, in Madison County, North Carolina, Herbie lived a life filled with adventure, dedication, and a genuine zest for life.

Herbie’s journey began in the small town of Madison County, where he developed a love for the great outdoors. He inherited a spirit of exploration and a passion for hunting and fishing, which led him to pursue his interests across the United States and Canada. Whether it was tracking game in the wilderness or engaging in friendly competition at the poker table, Herbie found joy in the thrill of the chase.

After completing his education, Herbie honorably served our country in the United States Army. His time in the military shaped him into the dedicated and disciplined man he became known for. During his service, he earned numerous accolades, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 bronze stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Combat Infantryman Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm. Herbie’s commitment to his country and fellow soldiers was unwavering.

Following his time in the armed forces, Herbie embarked on a fulfilling career as a plumber, working diligently with W.D. Sam’s Plumbing, Wilson & Cline Plumbing, and Curtis Key Plumbing/Greenbrier Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning. His expertise and strong work ethic made him an invaluable asset to his colleagues and friends. Herbie’s dedication extended beyond professional boundaries, as he formed lasting friendships with his coworkers, who became like family.

In his leisure time, Herbie enjoyed the company of his loved ones, especially when gathered around a card table. His passion for playing Texas Hold ‘Em at the casino and engaging in friendly card games brought people together and created cherished memories. He had a unique ability to make everyone feel welcome and included, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie wherever he went.

On December 30, 2023, Herbie peacefully passed away in Chesapeake, Virginia, due to Congestive Heart Failure and COPD. Herbie was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Annie Hill Madison. He leaves behind a multitude of cherished memories and a legacy of resilience, kindness, and dedication. Herbie’s spirit will forever live on in the hearts of his four surviving children, Danny Ray Madison, Lisa Anne Madison, Keith Madison and Lyle Madison; his caregiver, Kathy O’Farrell; and the friends he made throughout his life, both in his professional career and beyond. His memory will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Services to honor and celebrate the remarkable life of Herbert “Herbie” Forbes Madison will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 11 a.m. within the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Key Family Estate, 6309 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23502. As we gather to pay tribute, let us remember Herbie’s indomitable spirit and the impact he had on all of our lives. May his memory serve as a guiding light, inspiring us to live life to the fullest and cherish every precious moment we are given.

In lieu of flowers, friends may be moved to donate to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in his honor.
