Lena R. Harrod, 87, of Williamsburg

Lena R. Harrod (Whiting’s Funeral Home)

God saw the road was getting rough
and the hills were hard to climb.
So, He gently closed her loving eyes
and whispered, “Peace be Thine.”

On Friday, June 2, 2023, the Lord sent for one of his angels, our beloved Lena Harrold for eternal rest. Our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother peacefully answered the Master’s call in Walter Reed’s Convalescent Home. Her life began on January 21, 1936, the daughter of the late Samuel and Geraldine Roberts of James City County.

At an early age, she accepted Christ into her life and became a member of Little Zion Baptist Church. She was educated in the Williamsburg-James City County Public School System. For many years, she was employed by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation as a laundry worker. Playing cards, cooking, and listening to R&B and gospel music, especially Yolanda Adams, were some of her favorite pastimes.

She was preceded in death by her husband of forty years, Jessie “Bigg Jessie” Harrod; sisters, Cleo Williams and Queen Hundley Freeman; and brothers, Fredrick Harris, Junious Roberts, and Samuel Roberts Jr.

She leaves to cherish precious memories with her daughter, Shelia Butler (Ray); sons, Hubert Hall Jr. and Jessie Harrod Jr.; sister, Cora Cowles; sisters-in-law, Frances Roberts, Lois Harris, and Thelma Griffin; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2023, at Little Zion Baptist Church. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Harrod may be viewed in the church on Friday beginning at noon. Facial coverings are recommended for all services.
