Herbert George Anderson, 92, of Virginia Beach

Herbert George Anderson (Altmeyer Funeral Home)

Herbert George Anderson, age 92, passed away peacefully April 28, 2023 in Virginia Beach Virginia. He was born in Flushing NY to George and Terese Anderson.

Herb was raised in New York City and went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. When he returned from the war, he met the love of his life Gail VanDusen Anderson with whom he enjoyed 65 years of marriage. Herb graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from Pratt Institute. He and Gail moved to Richmond, VA where he worked for what was then known as Virginia Electrical Power Company (Dominion Resources).

Herb’s priorities were clear. His faith in the grace of God and his love of Jesus held true to the end; he was a man of prayer. His love for his wife and 3 daughters, and their families (5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren) was unfailing, and he counted service to his church, community and country a privilege. Herb served as an elder at Kempsville Presbyterian Church, and was an active member of Greenbriar Presbyterian and then lastly at Nimmo United Methodist. He was a member of Civitan, and after retirement, enjoyed volunteering helping adults learn English as a second language at the Virginia Beach Adult Learning Center where he received the Volunteer of the Year Award.

When Herb wasn’t in Virginia Beach or traveling, he called Harpswell, Maine home. It was there that he enjoyed sailing, nature, gardening, and hosting gatherings of friends and family as well as being an active member of West Harpswell Baptist Church. He will be remembered by his grandchildren for supplying many an adventure on the water as well as closing the day with the reading of a good children’s book. He was an avid woodworker and Mr. Fix-it. He was someone you would want as a neighbor and never met a stranger.

Herb is survived by his wife Gail Anderson and his daughters and their families: Laurie Duxbury (Bill) and grandchildren David Duxbury (Umberto Campia) and Christen Duxbury (Matt Spitzer) and grandchildren, Makenna and Rowen; Kathy Luehman (Jim) and grandchildren, Elizabeth Curley (Ray) and great grandchildren Charlotte and Lily and Thomas Luehman (Avery) and great grandchild Chace; and Susan Brownie (Bill) and grandson Will.

Herb’s family would like to thank the many wonderful folks who have embraced Herb and the rest of us with patience, love and kindness over the years. We would like to specifically thank the staff of Westminster Canterbury Hospice and the aides from Senior Corps (the Key) who graciously made it possible for Herb to live his last 3 years at home with Gail. We are also grateful to D. Blair and her staff at Hearts at Home who provided Herb with attentive care and a beautiful home in which he could go in peace.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, May 27th at Nimmo United Methodist Church with a reception following at 1 p.m. at the Anchor Room at Atlantic Shores Retirement Community.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Union Mission Ministries PO Box 3203, Norfolk VA 23514-3203.
