Mary Josephine “Mary Jo” Brooks Carlton, 80, of King & Queen, VA passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, March 25, 2023 with her family at her side.
She was a member of Lower King & Queen Baptist Church where she served in various roles throughout her lifetime. She was a member of the Central King & Queen Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Mary Jo enjoyed watching all sports, especially baseball and NASCAR, but her favorite events were the ones her son, Troy, participated in; she never missed a game. She retired from St. Laurent Paper Co., and later worked for Massey Oil Company and PAPCO Oil Company. Mary Jo was a loving mother, aunt and friend who enjoyed cooking for and helping people. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends.
Mary Jo was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years Alvie Carlton; her parents John Robert Brooks, Sr. and Lucille Shackleford Brooks; three sisters Myrtis Jones, Frances Revere and Ruth Schools; and a brother John R. “Bubba” Brooks, Jr.
She is survived by her only son Troy Carlton (Colleen); several nieces and nephews and numerous lifelong friends.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to her wonderful caretakers and devoted friends Jean Carlton, Margie Longest, Linda Bristow, Trudy Sears, Ruth West, Doris Morris and Carroll Hazzard.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1 at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th Street, West Point, VA 23181. The family will receive friends 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, March 31 at the funeral home. Following the memorial service, the family will receive friends at The Woman’s Club of King and Queen County, 208 Allen’s Circle, King and Queen Courthouse.
