James Randolph Story, Jr. died peacefully at home on March 2, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Jim was born in Amherst, Virginia on June 11, 1935 to James Randolph Story, Sr. and Lillian Oden Dawson Story. He attended Madison Heights High School, Lynchburg College, Roanoke College and finished his education with a MBA from Old Dominion University. Jim served in the Army from 1958-1961.
Jim treasured the many summers he worked for Clarence Smith at The Avamere Hotel. Many friendships were born during this time, and he loved to share these wonderful memories.
Jim worked for the IBM Corporation for 13 years in sales and moved on to commercial interior and design sales for Interscapes Commercial Interior Design and Furnishings, Chasen’s Business Interiors, GF Office Equipment Manufacturer, Modern Environments, Price-Modern, and Mega Office Furniture. At each of these companies, he formed many lifelong relationships that meant the world to him.
Jim also had a love of music. He played the piano at the Officers’ Club every Friday night at Fort Story for close to three decades and revived the tradition with a group of wonderful friends who would alternate hosting get-togethers once a month for a sing along, the Choir Practice as it was so fondly named. Friends would gather around the piano while JIm played, singing old tunes. Although he did not read a single note of music, he could listen to a song and play it so eloquently. Jim volunteered at Sentara Virginia Beach Hospital for 15 years playing the piano in the lobby.
Jim loved life; he loved the beach, his long walks and bike rides on the boardwalk, and helping those in need. He was a true gentleman. Jim is survived by his wife, Ruth Anne Owen Story; daughter Ellen Owen Story; and three grandchildren: Tara Anne-Randolph Chandler, Blair Alexandra Chase, and Gordon Reid Chase. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a later date.
