Susie Wright, 84, of Yorktown

Susie Wright, born on September 25, 1938, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2023. She was the daughter of Thurston and Ethel Slaughter Rainey.

At an early age, Susie joined the Grafton Baptist Church in Harris Grove, VA and was an active member of the B.W. Morrison Gospel Chorus, Queen Esther Missionary Society, Seniors on the Move, and Kitchen Committee.

On November 11, 1955, Susie was united in holy matrimony with Hartwood Wright.

She was employed at York Crab and Oyster Company for many years and retired from York County Public Schools. She was also a volunteer at the Port Shelter and Peninsula Food Bank.

Susie had many hobbies, including softball, puzzles, and watching various sports, particularly basketball, baseball, and softball. She enjoyed watching her favorite athletes, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal, and was a fan of women’s professional softball, college baseball, Little League Baseball, and Little League Softball.  Described as a “quiet spirit,” Susie was a natural caregiver gifted with the knowledge of how to care for sick people. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was always available to babysit and care for them. Susie was also incredibly proud of their achievements and was front row and center at their many school and college events.

Susie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Hartwood Wright, granddaughter Eleni Wright, and brothers, James Rainey, Clarence Rainey, and Charles Rainey.

Susie is survived by her daughters, who were also her caregivers and loves of her life, Angie Wright and Marilyn White (Gene); grandchildren, Gene White (Sherry), Julian White, and Derrick White (Brendy); great-grandchildren, Elijah Williams, Skylar Williams, and London White; bonus grandchildren, Brielle and Dayla; sister, Pearl Perrin; sister-in-law, Mary Abney; dear friend, Helen Sampson; and a host of other family and friends.

Susie will be dearly missed and remembered by all those whose lives she touched.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 24, 2023, at Grafton Baptist Church Harris Grove.  Live stream will be available at the beginning of the service.  Interment to follow in Grafton Baptist Church Memorial Park.  Mrs. Wright may be viewed from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
