George Stanley Crawley, Jr., 81, of Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS — In loving memory of George Stanley Crawley, Jr., who died on January 5, 2022, after a brief illness. George Crawley, Jr. was born July 8, 1940 to the late George S. Crawley Sr. and Elizabeth Gordon Crawley in Montrose, Virginia. He graduated from A.T. Johnson High School in 1960. After graduating George enlisted in the United States Air Force reaching the rank of Master Sergeant. During his military service he lived in various states: Nebraska, Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland and Florida, as well as, abroad in Greenland, the Philippines and Germany. He honorably retired from the Air Force after 24 years of service. After retirement he loved the Virginia area and moved his family there. He was a resident of Newport News, Virginia for the majority of his life. After his retirement from the military George worked as a Civil Servant, employed at the Naval Weapons Station-Cheatham Annex in Yorktown, Virginia; retiring after 16 years of service. George was a man who loved working for his livelihood to care for his family. He was hired by Wal-Mart in 1998 and worked at their Newport News store until his untimely illness and death. He was a loyal worker and well respected by his supervisors and co-workers. He was endeared by the customers who shopped there. He became affectionately know to the customers/ community as “the Wal-Mart Man”. He was considered the “face” of Wal-Mart. George was a people person and loved greeting the customers, knowing that he was the first smiling face arriving customers would see.

In 1960 he married Lois Smith and they were married until her death in 2000. To this union was born a daughter, Deatrice.

On March 3, 2016 he married Cheryl McClain. They spent their years together serving Jehovah and making many good memories doing the things they both enjoyed. After a study of the bible he was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on December 31, 2017 at the age of 77! He served Jehovah faithfully as a member of the Oyster Point Congregation until the time of his death.

George was preceded in death by his parents: George S. Crawley Sr. and Elizabeth Gordon Crawley and his first wife, Lois Smith Crawley, two brothers, Robert Gordon, Rodney Crawley and a sister, Princess Ann Arthur. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Cheryl M. Crawley, his daughter, Deatrice Harris of Newport News, VA, his sisters, Delma Arthur (James) Montrose, VA and Yvonne Lacey, Fredericksburg, VA; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Crawley (Rodney-deceased), Dora Gordon (Robert-deceased). Grandchildren: Lorenzo Harris, Blair Holmes (Saaed), Ricky “RJ” Harris, two great-granddaughters, Laila and Bella; step-daughter, Michelle Cohen (Jabari) and grandchildren, Joshua, Ariel and Noah.

The Memorial Service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 15, 2022 via Zoom.
