Colin Kernan Lowrey, 37, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep at his home in Hampton, Virginia during the early morning hours of Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020. He was 10 days shy of his 38th birthday.

Colin was born in the hospital at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage, Alaska, on the cold, snowy morning of Oct. 10, 1982. His father, a career Army officer was stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska, at the time.

Colin moved to Hampton in July 1984 when his father was reassigned to Fort Monroe. He grew up in Hampton, spending the rest of his life in the Tidewater area. He attended Hampton City Schools and was an avid participant in the youth sports programs offered by the city, excelling at soccer.

At an early age Colin discovered he had an affinity for and considerable talent as a restaurant cook, and spent almost 20 years in the food service industry. His talents were well recognized, and he was a valuable addition to the kitchens of many restaurants in the Tidewater area. He loved to put smiles on people’s faces with his food.

Colin had legions of close friends throughout the region and loved sharing time listening to music, especially that of his favorite band, The Grateful Dead. Colin was a devoted “Deadhead,” and traveled the country to watch and hear them play.

Colin was taken from this life far too soon, and his passing leaves a huge hole in the hearts of his family and friends. He is survived by his parents, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. W. Freed Lowrey of Fishkill, New York, and Suzanne K. Lowrey of Hampton; brothers, Kyle Christopher Lowrey of Spokane, Washington, and Brendan Patrick Lowrey of Hampton; children, Colin Lowrey II, Lyle Lowrey and Dorothy Lowrey of Suffolk, and sons, Zion and Gideon Cowfer of Detroit, Michigan; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

A private memorial service is being planned by the family.
