VIRGINIA BEACH — Lois D. Yarina, 78, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020, at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital. She was born Sept. 6, 1942, to the late Frank William Zaveckas and Louise Zaveckas in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

She graduated from Gloucester High School in Gloucester, New Jersey, and moved away from the area with her husband, Albert, when he joined the Navy.

She served as a proud military wife for over 20 years. Living abroad four years, in Fusara, Italy, she volunteered her time to translate English to Italian, as she picked up the language like it was her own.

Returning to United States, they settled in Virginia Beach, and she was cafeteria manager at Linkhorn Elementary School for many years. She put her heart and soul in the food that she provided for the kids, just as she would have for anyone she ever met.

She was also known as “Crochet Granny” to all who knew her. She started crocheting when she was just five years old. She could crochet a hat and scarf in only one day. She gave away many hats and scarfs to the local hospitals, the Virginia Beach Samaritan House, the local Judeo-Christian Outreach Center and all of her relatives.

Lois is survived by her husband, Albert Yarina Sr.; three children, Albert Jr., Thomas and Frank (Roxanne); three grandchildren, Amber, Brooke and Kaitlin; and one great-granddaughter, Lillian.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 3, at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach.
