Eugene Alexander Gatlin, 77, passed away Friday, Aug. 17, 2018, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was born July 10, 1941, to the late Julia Owens (Melvin) and Edward Shaw in Virginia Beach.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jonah Gassaway; and three siblings, Keith Owens, Shirley Shaw and Marion Hartfield.
He was a 1960 graduate of Princess Anne County Training School and was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church, Virginia Beach. He worked as a brick mason. Very athletic, he was an avid basketball and softball player.
He is survived by six children, Jimi M. Monroe, Myron Goffigan, Gregory, Eugene, Dwayne and Anthony Gatlin; 15 siblings, Marvin, Cornell, Gerald and Tilman Owens, Edward Shaw Jr., Evelyn Moore, James, Celester, Donnell and Bishop Larry L. Shaw, Anzella Jackson, Rory Shaw, Laverne Jones, Linda Robbins and Daisy Stephenson; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 23, at Beach Funeral & Cremation Services Inc., 4456 Bonney Road, Virginia Beach. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 24, at Rehoboth Baptist Church, 182 S. Birdneck Road, Virginia Beach. Interment will follow services at 1:30 p.m. in Roosevelt Memorial Park, 1101 Campostella Road, Chesapeake.
