Hebe Amy McLawhon, 104, passed away Friday, July 13, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. She lived at Westminster-Canterbury on the Chesapeake Bay. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Alberto Sadi Amy; husband of 54 years, Arthur McLawhon Jr.; and son-in-law, Donald Franklyn Snow Jr.
Hebe was born Nov. 20, 1913, in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Armida Ramirez Amy and William M. Amy. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico with a degree in French. She married Arthur June 18, 1943, while he was stationed in Puerto Rico during World War II. During their many years together, they lived in Washington, D.C.; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Norfolk, Virginia. They spent their retirement years cruising up and down the East Coast and throughout the Chesapeake Bay on their cabin cruiser, the ArtaBay.
Hebe had two passions in life: caring for her family and reading. She was devoted to her husband and two daughters. She was an avid reader, enjoying books of all genres. Her bookshelf was filled with books written in English, Spanish and French. She was fluent in five languages including Italian and Portuguese.
She is survived by her daughters, Arleen McLawhon Young, and her husband, Drew MacKenzie Young, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Gail McLawhon Snow of Madison, Connecticut. Grandchildren include Drew MacKenzie Young III of New York City, and his wife, Hyun Mi Choi, and their children, Mary Hebe, Drew MacKenzie and Daniel Arthur; Amy Elizabeth Young Caracci of Durham, North Carolina, and her husband, Aaron Caracci, and their daughter, Claire Elizabeth; Caitlin Elizabeth Young Evans of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and her husband, Hunter Evans, and their daughter, Hailey MacKenzie; Donald Franklyn Snow III of Canberra, Australia, and Wellington, New Zealand, and his son, Jonathan Donald Franklyn Snow; David Arthur Snow of Fukushima City, Japan, and his wife, Shizuka Tomiyama, and their children, Mayu (Suzu) McLawhon Snow and Oliver Tomiyama Snow; and Allison McLawhon Snow of Melbourne, Australia.
The family wishes to extend deepest gratitude to Hebe’s devoted caregiver, Charlene Wiggins, who provided tender loving care and companionship for many years. Additionally, we are very grateful to Chaplain Jennifer Spivey who provided comfort and support, not only to our mother, but to the entire family. The entire second floor staff at the Hoy Center, including nurses, nursing assistants and custodial staff, who attended to mother with competence, kindness and love. Our family thanks you all.
