On Friday, March 4, 2016, God sounded his trumpets to call Charles Lee Hawkins Sr. home to glory.
He was a native of Princess Anne County, born the son of the late Meekin and Cora Hawkins on June 25, 1921. He retired from International Longshoremens Association, Local 1248, after 43 years of service. After retiring, he farmed on his land with his son until his health no longer allowed. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life for 67 years, his wife, Lula A. Hawkins; 12 siblings, Alice Brew, Elise Jones, Frances Foreman, Fannie Miles, Verlin Adams, Ida, Walter, Robert, Oliver, John, Harvey and Meekin Hawkins.
Cherishing his fondest memories are his four children, Charles L. Hawkins Jr. (Deborah), Ann Washington (Derick), Priscilla Wooten (Dewayne) and Clifton ‘Shine’ Baxter, all of Virginia Beach; one brother, Edmon ‘Buddy’ Hawkins; one sister, Thelma Riddick; five grandchildren, Lakeachia West, Morgan Wooten, Michele Jones, Dion Williams and Mouquita Williams; five great-grandchildren, Josiah Williams, Nikolai Moss, Louis Petaway, Layla West and Akya Williams; his best friend, Otis Butts; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at Beach Funeral & Cremation Services Inc., 4456 Bonney Road, Virginia Beach. A homegoing celebration will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 875 Baker Road, Virginia Beach. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park.
