Mildred V. ‘Sissy’ Morrisette, 89, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, March 2, 2016, surrounded by her loving family after a brief illness. Mildred was born in Virginia Beach to Vernon and Pauline Morrisette.
She graduated from Oceana High School, and soon after, began her career in banking, joining National Bank of Commerce on Atlantic Avenue in 1945. With the encouragement of the late Claiborne Bryant, her first boss, she began taking bank-related courses from various colleges and universities. In 1963, she was the first Virginia Beach woman to become a banking official. Through several mergers and many different branch office locations, she ended her 48-year career where it began. She retired from the oceanfront branch of Nations Bank (now BOA) as vice president and personal banker.
In addition to her banking career, she helped run what was the family business at the time, Laskin Marina and ‘Sight Seeing Boat Cruise,’ tending the dock and booking the boat cruises on weekends.
There are no words to describe Mildred’s love for her family. She was our beloved matriarch and the glue that held us all together. Nothing thrilled her more than being around her loved ones. She was the greatest example of unconditional love, she was selfless and kind, always encouraging, always saw the glass half full and saw the good in everyone.
Mildred was preceded in death by both of her parents, her two brothers and sister in-laws, William and Betty Morrisette and Langley and Evelyn Morrisette.
Mildred was never married and has no children of her own, but we are all her children. She leaves behind her niece and nephews, Alan Morrisette, and wife, Carla, Kathy Spadea, and husband, Frank, Craig Morrisette and Wayne Morrisette; great-nieces and nephews, Russell Clark, and wife, Angie, Adam Morrisette, and wife, Annie, April Nix, and husband, Zach, Aimee Morrisette, Jacob Murphey and Marena Murphey; great-great-nieces and nephews, Elijah and Levi Clark, Adi, Emma, Joshua and Caleb Nix and Kaleigh Morrisette. And we can’t forget her beloved dog, ‘Jazzie.’
Mildred was most appreciative of the compassionate nurses at Beach General, with special thanks to Randi, Carrie and Hannah.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 7, at Scott Memorial UMC.
