
Inez McDonald Conyers, of Williamsburg, died peacefully on Jan. 2, 2015, at the age of 93.
Born in Sumter, South Carolina on Nov. 25, 1921, Inez was the youngest child of the late Thomas and Emma Murray McDonald. She spent her childhood in Sumter, graduating from the all-black Lincoln High School and later attending Morris College.
In 1942, Inez married the love of her life, Anthony Conyers Sr. and moved to Williamsburg where they raised a family and created a good life for themselves, their children and grandchildren. They joined Zion Baptist Church in Lightfoot and raised their children in a Christian household. She was employed at the College of William and Mary from 1952 until her retirement in 1977.
Inez was an avid reader and an enthusiastic news devotee, who passed on her quest for knowledge to her children. As matriarch of the family, she was a force to be reckoned with and was respected and loved by her family and friends.
Inez was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Sr.; her daughter, Deborah Conyers Simons; her stepson, Jessie White; sister, Thomasine McDonald Davis; and brother, Eugene McDonald.
She is survived by her daughter, Earthel Conyers Foster and her husband, Joseph; her son, Anthony Conyers Jr. and his wife, Cressondra; her grandchildren, Anthony Conyers III, Allison Conyers, Sherri Simons, Sherri Gamble and Christopher Willis; a devoted friend, Margie Crew; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at noon on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015, at New Zion Baptist Church, 3991 Longhill Road, Williamsburg. Interment will follow at Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Lightfoot, Virginia.
