Berta Walburga Smith, of Williamsburg, died March 30, 2014, at the age of 79.
She was born in Ravensburg, Germany and was educated in Germany and Switzerland. She loved traveling and lived all over the world with her husband and love of her life, Clyde Dale Smith. The couple met in Echterdingen, Germany in 1960 at the airport where Mrs. Smith worked.
Together, the couple moved to the United States where Mrs. Smith became a supportive U.S. Army wife and loving mother. Later, after her husband was stationed at Ft. Stewart, Ga., Mr. Smith worked as a civilian there before taking a job opportunity in Germany. Mrs. Smith loved being back in Germany and made many new friends in and around Schweinfurt. Eventually, the Smiths returned to Ft. Stewart before retiring to Williamsburg to live at Colonial Heritage.
Mrs. Smith loved her family above all else and enjoyed spending time with her “grand dog,” Noah, cooking, fine dining and shopping. Her passion in life was to love and care for animals, especially dogs.
She is survived by her beloved and doting husband, Clyde; daughters, Ellen Smith Gajda and husband, Tom, of Williamsburg and Sandra Kay Beaudoin and husband, Walter, of Guyton, Ga.; grandchildren, Brittany Shirley and Ryan Phillips, of Savannah, Ga.; and grand dogs, Noah and Clyde.
Mrs. Smith will be interred at a private funeral service at Arlington National Cemetery.
