Charles Granville Puffenberger, 65, retired engineer manager with Newport News Shipbuilding

Charles Granville Puffenberger, of Williamsburg, died March 9, 2014, at the age of 65.

Mr. Puffenberger retired from Newport News Shipbuilding as an engineering manager in 1987. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and again in the Korean War. He was a registered engineer in Virginia and active in the Society of Professional Engineers, serving on the state board and as chapter president. He was also a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and the American Society of Naval Engineers.

He graduated from Luray High School, the Newport News Apprentice School and the University of Michigan where he earned two bachelor’s degrees, one in naval architecture and marine engineering and the other in mathematics. He completed graduate work at the University of Michigan, University of Pittsburgh and Old Dominion University. He also received a year’s training in nuclear engineering at the Westinghouse Atomic Power Division.

He was an active member of the North Riverside Baptist Church in the early 1960s and the Williamsburg Baptist Church since 1964. He enjoyed serving as Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, chairman of building and grounds and many other positions. He was also active in AARP having served as state director and as chapter president. He was a past member of Queens Lake Board.

He was born in Luray on Dec. 30, 1921, son of Albert and Lelia Puffenberger. “CG of Puff,” as he was known by his friends and family, is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Jan Puffenberger: children, Kirk, wife, Candice and their children, Leah and Kyle, Sharmon, husband, Wayne and sons, Ben and Travis, Kent, wife, Kate and daughters, Katlin and Kelsey and Jana Puffenberger; and great-grandchildren, Austin, Levi and Addy, children of Travis and Rachel Stratton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2014, at Williamsburg Baptist Church. Interment will be held at the church memorial garden with a reception following in the south wing.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Williamsburg Baptist Church Endowment Fund or other charity of your choice.
