Carnita “Connie” Johnson Woods, 64, actively participated with local NAACP

Carnita “Connie” Johnson Woods was a lifelong learner and treasured education; her academic accomplishments include graduation from South Hopkins High School, Saint Leo College and the Medical Career Institute and her recent course in Public Administration at Thomas Nelson Community College.

Mrs. Woods was born on June 15, 1949, in Madisonville, Ky. and died Dec. 14, 2013.

She loved people, especially children. Her tireless dedication to caring for others and serving others was showcased in every aspect of her life. She was a consummate professional and worked as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor at Fort Eustis, a Family Support Coordinator with Army Community Service and a licensed practical nurse at Eastern State Hospital.

Mrs. Woods volunteered with the Special Olympics for several years, was a life member of the NAACP and actively participated with the York-James City-Williamsburg Chapter of the NAACP where she served as chair of the Scholarship Committee. She was a former member of Colonial Temple #380, Daughters of Elks.

She was a faithful member of Mount Gilead Baptist Church where she served in numerous ministries including the Armor Bearers Ministry. She enjoyed cooking, baking, singing, shopping, traveling and preparing tea for her pastor, Bishop Dawson. Her generosity, sense of humor, and keen insight will be greatly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Henry Johnson, Sr. and Cora Lee Holt Johnson; her husband, whom she married on July 19, 1984, Michael; two sisters, Joan Murphy-McKinzie and Valinda Young; and two brothers, Bruce Johnson and Dennis Johnson.

Mrs. Woods is survived by three daughters, Shantise Forrest, of Houston, Texas, Jessica Woods and Stephanie Woods, of Williamsburg; sisters, Charlotte Johnson and Jacqulyn Johnson, of Williamsburg; brothers, William Johnson (Theresa), of Dearborn Heights, Mich. and Jerry Johnson (Sharon), of Madisonville, Ky.; brother-in-law, Raymond Woods, Jr., of East Saint Louis, Ill.; seven grandsons; one granddaughter; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and long-time devoted friends.

A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, from 6 to 8 pm, at at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, 8660 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg. A home-going celebration will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at the church.
