The Score: Tuesday’s Bay Rivers District Girls Basketball Roundup (w/ Standings)

York beats New Kent for first district win, Brown pours in season high to lead Lafayette to 10th straight win, Tabb and Warhill falter after strong starts against favored opponents and more.

York 52  New Kent 44

After entering the fourth quarter knotted at 35-all, York outscored host New Kent 17-9 the rest of the way to earn the first Bay Rivers District win of the season. Rakeema Willis netted a game-high 18 points and Taylor Wynne added 10 to lead the Falcons (2-11, 2-8 BRD), who play host to Warhill on Thursday.

Smithfield 63  Warhill 53

Kasey Grainer (25 points) dominated in the paint early as Warhill led 22-10 after the first quarter before Jordan Brooks (22 points) and Jamilla Jordan (18 points) guided Smithfield back for a 63-53 come-from-behind road victory. The win boosted the Packers record to 8-2 on the year — a game behind co-first place Lafayette (9-1 BRD) and Grafton (9-1 BRD) — while he Lions fell to 2-8 on the season with the loss.

Poquoson 53  Tabb 33

Tabb coach Amber Throckmorton said her team played “awful” in the second half after entering the break down just three points. The Tigers scored just 11 combined points during the final two quarters to Poquoson’s 28 en route to suffering a 53-33 home loss.

Lafayette 61  Bruton 34

Senior Old Dominion University commit Keyana Brown scored a season-high 33 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Lafayette past Bruton, 64-34, on the road Tuesday. Tiara Strong added 18 points, eight rebounds and two blocks for the Rams, who won their 10 game in a row to improve to 11-1 (9-1 BRD)  on the season heading into Thursday’s first-place showdown with Grafton (9-1 BRD). Naya Samuels led the Panthers (5-7) with 11 points.

Grafton 58  Jamestown 40

Hannah Olson filled up the stat sheet with 23 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and six steals as Grafton jumped out to a 30-18 halftime lead and cruised to a 58-40 victory. Olivia Wilson returned from a two-game absence and scored 10 points to go along with six rebounds and Danijela Celar finished with nine points for the Clippers (11-2, 9-1 BRD), who visit Lafayette for a matchup to decide sole possession of first place in the district Thursday. Jamiyah Johnson scored a team-high 16 points to lead Jamestown (3-7, 3-7 BRD).
