William and Mary basketball coach Tony Shaver announced Thursday that senior standout Brandon Britt has been suspended due to a violation of team rules. The length of the suspension will be determined following the completion of an administrative process.

Britt was arrested by the Williamsburg Police Department on Oct. 25 for driving while intoxicated. He will be tried for the misdemeanor charge that carries up to 12 months in jail and a maximum fine of $2,500 in Williamsburg-James City County District court at 1 p.m. Jan. 9.

“It is an unfortunate circumstance, but Brandon remains an important part of our program,” Shaver said in a news release. “He will continue to practice with the team, and we look forward to getting him back on the court for his senior season.”

As a junior last season Britt averaged more than 30 minutes per contest and was the Tribe’s third leading scorer at 13.9 points per game. One of the Tribe’s better defensive players, Britt also averaged a team-high 1.1 steals per game.
