If you’re wondering how much crime there’s been in Newport News so far, here are the stats

NEWPORT NEWS — As we near the halfway point in the year, this city is on pace to have the same amount of murders as it had in 2016.

Like in 2016 through March, there have been five murders, according to the city’s website — 2017 city wide crime stats have not been released yet.

But by the end of 2016, the city saw a 10-year high of 30 murders. In the state of Virginia there were 480 murders reported by the state police that year.

Aggravated Assault

Through March, there have been 96 aggravated assaults. In 2016, city wide there were 469 total. This represented the highest city total since 2009, when there were 536 total.

Statewide there were 98,645 assaults in 2016.

Rape

There were 71 rapes in the city in 2016, which was the most since 2010 when there were 67. Through March this year there have been 14 rapes in Newport News.

In Virginia, there were 5,529 rapes in 2016.

Robbery

So far in Newport News there’s been 46 robberies reported. In 2016, there were 238 total. The city has hovered in between 238-245 robberies over the last five years.

In the state, there were 4,796 robberies in 2016.
