Ash Wednesday is going to look a little different this year.

The Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship and Sacraments released guidelines back in January for ash distribution for congregations to follow all over the world.

One major change is instead of marking the cross on the forehead, priests will be sprinkling ashes on top of people’s heads. Priests are also requested to wear face masks and cleanse their hands before distributing ashes to the congregation.

As for where and when to receive ashes, here are the mass times for local Catholic churches.

St. Bede Catholic Church

Ash Wednesday masses will be at 7 a.m., 9 a.m., and 5 p.m. A Spanish mass will be at 7 p.m.

Drive-through ashes will be provided starting at noon and go until the end of the day. Patrons are asked to remain in their vehicles as they drive around the circle in front of the church.

St. Bede Catholic Church is located at 3686 Ironbound Road in James City County,

St. Olaf, Patron of Norway Catholic Church

There will be two masses at St. Olaf, one at noon and the second at 7 p.m. Both masses will be livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube. To access the livestream, click here.

St. Olaf, Patron of Norway Catholic Church is located at 104 Norge Lane in Williamsburg.

St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church

St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church will have mass at 9 a.m. and praise and worship at 7 p.m.

Ashes will be distributed at both times.

St. Joan of Arc is located at 315 Harris Grove Lane in Yorktown.
