NEWPORT NEWS – The owners of the old Das Waldcafe don’t plan on converting the building into a tapas restaurant anytime soon.
“We’re still been renovating it,” said Matt Jones, who co-owns the building with his father, Joel.
In August 2018, the pair bought the building, which had been vacant for two years, and started renovating it while simultaneously running their ice sculpture and cocktail service business, Chisel and Shaker.

The business was renting a storefront in a Denbigh strip mall and recently relocated to the Das Waldcafe building.
In an interview with WYDaily in September 2018, Jones said he wanted to have a contemporary American tapas menu with Tex-Mex cuisine.
As this time, the project to open the restaurant is still in the works.
“Probably at the earliest this year,” Jones said. “Right now, we’re just taking the ice business and running with it.”
Chisel and Shaker is located on 12529 Warwick Blvd. For more information, visit their website or call 575-494-4177. You can also follow them on Facebook.
