Two Hornsby Middle School students will get a hands-on education in the workings of the state legislature when they serve as Senate Pages this year.
Jack DeVore and Peyton Emerson join 38 students from across the commonwealth who will assist senators during floor sessions and committee meetings now through the conclusion of the 2016 legislative session in March.
Senate Pages run errands, answer phones, file bills and assist departments that work with the General Assembly. Although they spend their days in Richmond, Senate Pages are expected to keep up with their school work and participate in a two-hour study hall Monday through Thursday.
To be selected for the program, students needed to write an essay about why they wanted to serve as Senate Pages and submit three letters of recommendation from teachers, community leaders or civic organizations. Senate Pages are paid for their service.
