
Three years ago, Gary Jerome Turner was driving on John Tyler Highway in a minivan with seven people when he ran off the road and struck a dump truck, killing a 14-year-old boy, police said.
After being indicted about nine months later on seven charges, the 39-year-old from Hampton could not be located.
He was arrested on Tuesday in Florida after he was pulled over for driving in an HOV lane to avoid a checkpoint, said Stephanie Williams-Ortery, a spokesperson for the James City County Police Department.
Turner was extradited to Williamsburg and charged with maiming while driving under the influence, reckless involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, two counts of child neglect, driving while under the influence and reckless driving with improper brakes.
The crash occurred around 8:05 p.m. Aug. 8, 2011. The 1997 Ford minivan Turner was driving on John Tyler Highway ran off the road, rolled numerous times and struck a dump truck that was traveling east, according to a police report.
Brashawnta Brooks, 14, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other injured passengers were taken to Riverside Hospital and MCV Hospital for treatment of injuries ranging from not life-threatening to critical, the report states.
Williams-Ortery had no further information about the crash or the status of those who were injured.
Turner will appear in Williamsburg-James City County Circuit Court for a hearing at 9 a.m. Oct. 24.
