The City of Williamsburg is taking the Jewish Mother restaurant to court.
The Williamsburg Redevelopment and Housing Authority, which operates under the purview of the city, filed a warrant in debt against the Jewish Mother of Williamsburg Unplugged LLC in Williamsburg-James City County General District Court on Friday.
Court records show the city is seeking $9,522.41 from the shuttered restaurant and concert venue, which defaulted on its five-year lease in the city-owned Triangle Building in August.
Scotty Miller, the owner of the Jewish Mother, signed a five-year lease with the city in September 2013. During its 10-month run in Williamsburg, the Virginia Beach-based restaurant consistently missed rent, tenant and utility payments.
The city repossessed the Triangle Building units that had been rented to the Jewish Mother after the restaurant failed to pay its July rent and tenant fees, in addition to late fees stemming from missed June and July payments.
The Jewish Mother also had not paid the city $2,360.66 for utility payments the city made in the restaurant’s name after the business failed to transfer the utility accounts to its name.
City Attorney Christina Shelton said a security deposit of $8,181, equal to one month’s rent, had been applied to the outstanding charges.
In September, the remaining Jewish Mother franchise in Virginia Beach ceased operations.
A hearing regarding WRHA’s lawsuit is scheduled for Nov. 10.
