A mechanical failure in a pickup truck sparked a fire, causing a 2-mile backup around mile marker 232 on Interstate 64 East while emergency crews worked at the scene Friday morning.

James City County fire units were called to the scene around 11:06 a.m. Friday to find the pickup truck “fully involved in fire,” Assistant Chief Miles Pettengell said in a news release. Units arrived at the scene around 11:12 a.m.

The right lane and shoulder were closed for about one hour as authorities worked to stop the fire and clear the scene.

The lane reopened at 11:58 a.m.

James City County reports all lanes around mile marker 232 on Interstate 64 East are now open.

The right lane and the right shoulder of Interstate 64 East are closed due to a vehicle fire around mile marker 232, the Virginia Department of Transportation reports.

Traffic is backed up about 2 miles, according to VDOT.

Units from the James City County Fire Department responded to the fire.

Assistant Chief Miles Pettengell said authorities were still at the scene around 11:30 a.m. trying to stop a fire that has engulfed a pickup truck.

He said there were no injuries. At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown.
