JAMES CITY COUNTY — Anyone who travels along the stretch of Longhill Road between 199 and Centerville Road has surely experienced a headache.

But there has been major progress on the widening project despite the traffic eyesore.

Back during the week of May 17,  contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) began the next phase of the Longhill Road Widening Project, which includes construction of the widening and intersection improvements at Longhill Road and Olde Towne Road/Devon Road, according to a May 17 news release from VDOT

East- and westbound traffic were shifted to the westbound lanes on the north side of Longhill Road, from just east and west of the Olde Towne Road/Devon Road intersection.

As part of this new traffic pattern estimated to be in place through mid-summer, project crews will close the eastbound lanes on the south side of Longhill Road to allow for the widening and construction of the southern portion of the intersection and roadway.

With the southern portion of the intersection under construction in this phase, crews will also implement a temporary full consecutive closure on Devon Road at the Windsor Forest neighborhood entrance, between Longhill Road and Wetherburn Lane, starting as early as May 19.

A signed detour directs motorists to use Berkshire Road and Buford Road as an alternate route and entrance to Windsor Forest for the duration of this phase estimated to take place through mid-summer 2021.

Once this phase is complete, both directions of traffic will then be shifted to the eastbound lanes on the south side of Longhill Road to continue work on the northern portion of the intersection and roadway this summer.

Construction on the project is estimated to be completed by Fall of 2021.

This work is dependent upon weather conditions; therefore, the schedule and duration of the work are subject to change.

Due to the increase in construction activity along Longhill Road and the Olde Towne Road/Devon Road intersection and potential for delays, motorists are advised to plan their commute by using VDOT’s free traffic information tools.
