The Newport News Police Department is in the process of hiring a specialist to help reduce domestic violence in the community.

The position reports to a police sergeant and the salary range for the position is $46,883.55 to $80,758.48, officials said.

“I just want to try something new,” said Police Chief Steve Drew.

Some duties of the specialist would include helping with community outreach such as working with middle, high school and college students, training police officers at the in-service training hours and working with the other agencies like Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and Transitions, Drew sid.

The goal is to take proactive stance against domestic violence, he noted.

In addition, the specialist would refer and help victims of domestic violence access personal and legal support and other community providers and resources, according to the city’s job posting.

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in counseling, guidance, psychology, sociology, criminal justice or a related field and 3 to 5 years of experience or a combination of education and experience and the department would prefer someone who has experience in assisting victims, social work and rehabilitation counseling.
