York County School Division and Langley Air Force Base have partnered to benefit the future of science and technology.

Officials at YCSD announced Tuesday it would be working with the Air Force Base for a new grant that would focus on “evidence-based, rigorous national STEM instruction.”

“We know that a strong foundation is math and science is key to student success in high-demand STEM career fields,” said Victor Shandor, division superintendent. “We are very excited for the opportunities that this new partnership will give our students to advance their skills and knowledge in this area.”

The grant from the U.S. Department of Defense is providing a two-year College Readiness Program from the National Math and Science Initiative to increase the number of students successfully taking college-level math, science, and English classes, officials said.

A spokesperson from the YCSD wasn’t immediately available to say how much the grant would payout to each school or if the district is required to match totals received.

In a news release, officials said the value would be based on “several factors, including the number of students and teachers, and is worth up to $592,000.”

The program will initially be offered at Grafton High School and York High School and will provide comprehensive and content-specific training through mentorships, instructional materials, and ready-to-use classroom and lab materials for teachers.
