A Williamsburg man is hospitalized in critical condition after he was hit late Friday while getting into a vehicle in Harrisonburg.
James Madison University student Jared Antle, 19, suffered a severe head injury when a Honda Pilot struck an SUV that was loading passengers in the 400 block of West Market Street just before midnight, Harrisonburg Police said.
The driver of the Pilot fled the scene on foot and has not been apprehended, police said.
There were other passengers in the SUV, but they were not injured, police said.
Police did not say whether there were any passengers in the Pilot, which has Virginia license tags VKL-2701.
Antle was first taken to a Harrisonburg hospital hospital before being flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, where he remains in critical condition.
Police did not identify Antle, but his family has been posting updates on his condition to the website caringbridge.com. According to their posts, Antle underwent two surgeries over the weekend to help reduce brain swelling and is being kept heavily sedated.
Antle graduated in 2017 from Lafayette High School, where he was a member of the baseball team. On Sunday, the team issued a call for prayers for Antle through its Twitter account.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help the family with expenses related to the accident, the family said.
Specific prayer requests for Jared: “brain swelling needs to continue to decrease, pray for no blood clots, continued steady vital signs, and no infections.”
