Editor’s note: This is the fourth installment of a five-part question and answer series with James City County’s five Community Services Unit officers. These officers are assigned to certain areas of the county and work directly with citizens to provide business and home inspections, as well as other services.
What zone do you work in and what areas does it cover?
Zone 5, which covers the upper, more rural end of the county, up to the New Kent line.
What do you like about working in that area?
“I like that it’s rural and there are farm areas and businesses as well. It reminds me of my hometown. Since I’m still kind of new [Graham started as a CSU officer over the summer], I’m still learning my zone and all it has to offer.”
What’s your favorite food?
“I don’t have a favorite food, but I’m always trying different recipes — especially vegan and vegetarian dishes… But I do like Mexican food as well.”
What’s your favorite animal and why?
“I like small breed dogs. Specifically Peekapoos [a mix between a Pekingese and a poodle]. They are so small and adorable like tiny little teddy bears. Someday, that is my goal to have one of those dogs.”
Do you have any pets?
“No pets currently. A busy daily schedule prevents me from owning pets, for now.”
If you could take a trip anywhere in the world, where would you go?
“I would go to Bora Bora… in French Polynesia in the South Pacific. There are turquoise lagoons and it’s so relaxing and a perfect vacation. The climate and landscapes, and the views and the water, it’s just so beautiful. It looks like perfection.”
If you hadn’t become a police officer, what other career would you be in?
“I would have worked toward being a forensic medical examiner. There’s a lot of science and doing different tests to find out what happened to a person. I find it really interesting to investigate how someone died.”
What do you like to do when you’re off-duty?
“When I’m off-duty, I do a lot of meal-prepping. I work out and see my family and friends. I also like to help people with things they’re doing. I’ll bake treats for other people upon request.”
What’s a crime prevention tip you want people to know?
“It’s easy to have the same routines every day… it can be convenient, but it also can make you predictable for criminals to commit a crime against you or your property. Don’t have the same routine. Vary the time you leave. Don’t go the same way to and from work. Don’t go on a jog at the same time every night, or even bring a friend.”
What’s a program or service that the department offers that you wish more people knew about and/or utilized?
“People should use our new police-to-citizen website. A lot of people don’t know about it, but it’s out there. It gives information on public safety and arrests, as well as crash reports and other information.”
