After being appointed interim clerk for the Circuit Court of York County in August, a longtime York County employee hopes to get eight more years in the position.

Kristen Nelson announced her Republican candidacy for Circuit Clerk in December. She was appointed by judges to fill the vacant position left by Lynn Mendibur, who resigned in August after 14 years.

Before her appointment, she served as deputy clerk for 18 years.

“I love what I do and continue to seek new ways to deliver improved, more efficient services to the people of York and Poquoson,” Nelson said in a news release announcing her candidacy.

Citizens will cast their votes in November for the clerk, whose duties include handling administrative matters, probating wills, granting administration of estates and appointing guardians. The clerk’s role is described as “custodian of the court records” by York County.

Nelson’s website states she has implemented new procedures and technologies that will cut office costs and give citizens better access to records and services.

A member of the Virginia Court Clerk’s Association, Nelson has been endorsed by York-Poquoson Sheriff J.D. “Danny” Diggs, Del. Brenda L. Pogge (R-96) and two former York-Poquoson Circuit Court Clerks.

Nelson is also a member of the York Republican Women’s Club, the Yorktown Preservation Society and the York County Republican Committee.
