HISTORIC TRIANGLE — Veterans Day is Tuesday, Nov. 11, and various civic groups, VFW Posts, American Legions, and schools around the Historic Triangle are planning Veterans Day ceremonies this week.

Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I when fighting ceased on Nov. 11, 1918. The day was first observed in 1919 to honor WWI veterans. In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress renamed it Veterans Day to honor all American veterans — living and deceased — who served in any branch of the military. It’s celebrated each year on Nov. 11 to recognize the courage and sacrifice of those who have defended the nation.

WYDaily compiled a list of ceremonies planned in the area.

  • VFW Post 8046 will host a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 at the Discovery Park Boulevard Veterans Bell Tower.
  • Yorktown will host a Veterans Day ceremony at noon on Nov. 11 in the board room at York Hall. The theme will pay tribute to Virginia’s Medal of Honor recipients. There will be music, a presentation, and all veterans in attendance will receive special recognition for their service.
  • Providence Classical School will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 9 a.m. on Nov. 11 at the school. The keynote speaker is Capt. Christopher Norris, United States Navy. He has served in key leadership roles around the world and now serves as Chief of Staff for Joint Force Coordinator Norfolk.
  • Peninsula Catholic High School in Newport News will host a Veterans Day mass and reception at 10:15 on Nov. 13 at the school. Anyone who would like to attend is asked to RSVP.
  • Colonial Williamsburg will host a Veterans Day ceremony at 10 a.m. on Nov. 11 on the Palace Green. From 3:30-4:30 p.m., a Veterans Day salute and procession will also take place, where all veterans are invited to walk down Duke of Gloucester Street to be recognized for their service.
