VIRGINIA BEACH — With summer road trips in full swing, AAA said drivers are getting a break at the pump, as gas prices match July 2021 numbers.

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gas dipped as low as $3.14 this past week before going up a few cents to $3.17, adding it’s been four years since the national average has been this low during the summer. The association cited an abundance of supply in the oil market for this season’s lower pump prices.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration, gasoline demand increased from 8.64 million barrels per day last week to 9.15 million, while total domestic gasoline supply decreased from 232.1 million barrels to 229.5 million. Gasoline production increased last week, averaging 9.9 million barrels per day.

Locally, the gas price average for the Commonwealth today is $3.06. Today’s price is two cents lower than a week ago and ten cents higher than a month ago. In Hampton Roads, prices decreased one penny to $3.06, which is eight cents higher than a month ago and 39 cents lower than a year ago.
